No Jib Sailing

As some have suggested, for learning, sail without the jib. I tried it yesterday in winds 7 - 10. Much eaiser to remember what to do when tacking , jibing etc. But lots slower and the boat would hardly move when the wind let off. Leaving the boat launch, which was in the lee of the South wind was a chore. Tacking on a light wind was tricky, came up into irons several times. Seems the jib produces lots of power. Good practice though.

To remove the windward helm, should the forestay be moved forward or aft? I had it set in the aft hole.

Forestay and Weather Helm

My Forestay is attached to a Stainless Stay Adjuster placed in the forward hole and I attach the Jib Tack to the aft hole.

Lots of things can affect the helm - Mast rake , Mainsheet adjustment, Centerboard position, position of Crew...

Mast - Rake it forward to reduce weather helm . If you can't point think about raking it back some.

In heavier air, Sheeting the main in too tight can cause excessive heeling and resulting weather helm. In light air, let 'em breathe - Tell tales on the leech really help .

I find myself steering my Boat by moving from the seat to the rail trying to balance what I feel through the tiller .

Lots of power in the jib, hard to point without it.

Fun boat to sail , We've been using the heck out of the hiking straps lately in 15-20 conditions.

Yes, I found out this too a few years ago. Without a jib, it is hard to tack at high wind. We almost couldn't get back the dock. Since then we always sail with the jib. Reef early also help.:)
