I’m getting around to ordering some new sails. I can’t read the Catalina sticker containing my hull number. My DMV paperwork shows hull ID number LPSD0869G586. I have a 1985 Mod II. Would the hull number be 586 or 869?

hull number vs. sail number

Can someone explain the significance of the hull number vs. the sail number. Are they supposed to be the same? I recently purchased a mod 1, and the hull number on the metal plate on the transom is different than the sail number. Is this an issue? Should I change the sail number to match the hull number?

In a one design fleet as the C14.2s are, the sail number should match the hull number. Lets say your boat is hull # 2890 and you have sail # 3000. Then you go to a regatta and the owner of hull # 3000 is racing with sail# 3000, you'd end up having to change your sail number so the boats could be correctly scored. That said, I've raced my C14.2 with sail numbers that don't match the hull and when its been a problem, adding a tempory duct tape "1" has fixed it. This class is very forgiving. Spend the money if you want but otherwise don't sweat it. Spend the money on something you'll enjoy and fix the problem when you buy that new main.

Thanks for your help! My question is answered. BTW, I've learned I have a 1986 Mod 2 (it came with the tupperware tube but I've replaced it with a hatch). I have encountered the situation Richard described (two boats with the same sail number) but I was in the Silver Fleet & the real 924 was in the gold fleet. I'll be sailing 869 from now on. My two favorite/lucky numbers!
