Mod 2 to a 3

IF I became really ambitious (husband works body shop) what would it take to turn my mod 2 into a 3? It seems so much area is wasting, and my boat is in such good shape I want to keep her. Got a history or thread for me?

I'm not sure I understand what you want to do to your boat. Are you wanting to remove the forward cuddy insert and replace that with a mod 3 hatch?

Mod 2 to Mod 3

Hey, it's a pretty ambitious project you've picked. Some things are practical, some are not. Here is something to consider: The early Mod 2s were like the Mod 1s in that the hull was glued to the deck, with a flat (useless) rubrail. The later Mod 2s were like the Mod 3s, in that the hull and deck were bolted together, with a nice fat, round rubrail. I don't know which you have, but if you have the Mod 1 type of deck-to-hull interface, you're stuck with it.

As for the hatch. The Mod 3 hatch won't fit a Mod 2, but you can remove the cuddy insert and build a custom hatch cover out of wood or plexiglass. Search this site for articles on how it was done. Many people have done it.

Can you retrofit your centerboard with a Mod 3 type of raising/lowering set-up (much simpler and better)? I know several people have inquired about this, but I don't know if anyone has done it. Is there anyone out there who has?

Good night, and good luck...

mod 2 to 3

Mt mod 2 is a '94, and what I was thinking was to attain more space than a 6-pack area. I beleive that my deck is one of the later ones Ed was describing. Now, Ed's mention of the ceterboard kick-up system interests me.

I converted my centerboard control to the mod 3 style. It was less expensive than replacing the mod 2 hardware, has less block less friction, and seems to be easier for single handed sailing.

Remove everything except the two blocks just below the cuddy. Remove the starboard block but use the eye strap to secure the rope. Run the rope through the block on the center board, then through the port block. Bring that back to the barney post. Drill and tap holes to mount one of the cam cleats to the post. (No pictures 'till sailing season - the boat is all covered now.)

I will eagerly await your pix. This sounds good to me. I have a neat husband that loves to work on my boat (but does not sail).

Mod 2 to 3 conversion

If you search this forum for centerboard control you will find photos and information on how to change the centerboard controls from a model 2 to a model 3. I did mine last year and it works great. You can use all the existing components but just remount them.
As for removing the cuddy. Would it be possible go to West Marine and buy a water tight hatch and install it. You would need to measure the opening that is left once the "tube" is removed buy a hatch and install. I would like to do this to my model 2 but was concentrating on learning to sail last year.
This forum is always a GREAT help. Thanks everyone.

Thanks
Roger Lohrey:)

Thanks for your imput Roger. I am STILL learning to sail. Just happen to be one of those people That like to "fix" things better. I'll take a look for what you memtioned. Spring is just around the corner. My boat is currently in a boat and sports show.
