spreader boots

Anybody know where I can get a "spreader boot"? I've checked with Catalina and they don't carry them in stock. I'm currently taping the shrowd to the spreader, but it keeps coming unravelling.

Also, Ed, I enjoyed reading your discussion on windvanes in the August issue of Mainsheet. What's the best kind to get for the C14.2?

Thanks.

Mod 1 method

I just had my stay come lose of the spreader. Is that your problem? On my Mod 1 the is some stainless steel wire (19 guage) that wraps around the stay after going thru the hole on the spreader to hold it all in place. Am I off base or does this help? you may have to untape the other stay to understand how it all connects. The drawing in my man ual did not tell the whole story.

Are you using a good quality rigging tape to tape your speaders ? I found that when I used electrical tape or cheaper non-rigging tape my tape job wouldn't last.

Spreader Boots - Source

West Marine sells a couple of different types of Spreader Boots. www.westmarine.com. Just type "Spreader Boot" into the keyword search and you'll two or three choices.

They fall into two types:

1 - Molded Vinyl covers that slide over the shroud and spreader (this is what I use and the smallest one they had worked great).

2 - Fabric and buckle version that uses a piece of cloth folded over the shroud and buckled around that spreader. It looks like you could make this if you had some spare cloth and zip-ties.

For the longest time I used just plain old exterior grade electrical tape. They key was to use exterior grade tape, I got my roll from a buddy that worked for the power company. It is sticker than regular tape and the more it sat in the sun the sticker it got. The only reason I added the vinyl boots was too clean up the rig.

Rigging tape

In my opinion, honest-to-goodness rigging tape is the only tape to use. Yes, it's expensive, but worth it. But be sure to streeeetch it as you put it on. Thats what makes it stick.

You are right. I had to undo the other boot to see how it all works, and its just some wire connected to the shroud and goes through a small hole on the spreader. I finally found a boot at West Marine, and it seems to be holding up pretty well. THanks for the e-mail.

Thanks for the advice. I finally got some boots at WEst Marine, and used rigging tape to secure them. It seems to work.
