Center Board

I recently purchased a Capri 14.2 which is housed on Lake Lanier, north of Atlanta. Can anyone give me insight on the centerboard? I have it configured so it hoists up, however when I'm sailing there is nothing keeping it in place and it seems to want to come up. I'm not sure if there is any harm in it doing so. Any advice?

Get shocked!

Music Man,

There should be a shock cord (bungee where I come from) that runs from the eyelet that’s sits on the top of the center board back towards an eyelet on the transom of the boat, just below the hicking strap attachment.

When I purchased my '90 14.2 last year, mine was an original shock cord and had no life left in it to keep the centerboard down. I simply replaced it with a hooked bungee cord you can pick up at any local hardware store and hooked it up in the same manor. You can have one specially made, I believe the total length should be 4 feet to give you the pull you need while allowing the centerboard to swing in case you encounter low ground or the dreaded shallow rock. Or you can do what I did and just replace it with a $2 hooked shock cord.

Here are a few links (http://capri14.org/forum/showthread.php?t=519, http://capri14.org/forum/showthread.php?t=364, http://capri14.org/vb/showthread.php?threadid=95) to a similar question with some diagrams. Once you understand what it does and how it works, you can spend as much or as little (like I did) to replace.

Enjoy,

Centerboard

Bigsky,

Thank you much for the help. You have unlocked quite a mystery! I have a '90 as well, and I'm trying to remember what hardware is on the actual centerboard to hook to. I don't think it's exactly like the picture. Anyway you've got me headed in the right direction. If you want to enter the bungee business I can send you some funds for your handywork, otherwise I may need to get working. I took off my hike straps and cabin cover this weekend any am going to have some new fabric put on to spruce things up. Let me know if you've got a spare moment to do some bungee work and I'll pay you in money or beer.

Thanks

Easy to make

Don't know if you have West Marine, or equivalent near you, but I was able to fabricate one my self at their shop. Just bought the shock cord and hog rings and used their tools to put it together.

Cover the loops with shrink tube after you are done for a non-snag finish.
