Floatation device, anyone tried it?

I've had problems with the boat turtling. Catalina sold me what seems to be a foam cover, about 2 feet long, that appears to go over the top of the jib (not a roller furling boat). Don't see any discussion of this device on the forum, but maybe I missed it. Has anyone ever seen one of these and have any advice on how to use it and what it's impact is on performance? Wouldn't use it racing.

Flotation....

I think I know what you are talking about and how it is used....a triangular device, maybe? If so, it goes over the top of the main. First you slide it up over the bottom of the mast, pointed end up, before you step the mast. Run the main halyard down through the center and connect to the head of the sail as usual. When you raise the main, it takes the flotation device (covering the very top of the sail) to the top of the mast. It looks kinda funny, but very effective I am told.
I can't comment on racing performance, other that to guess that it probably doesn't help much. ;)

Speaking of Capsizing............

If you were single-handing, and capsized, and were having trouble righting your Capri, and were offered help from a passing (larger) vessel............what kind of help would you ask for?

If you tossed them a jib sheet from the opposite side of the Capri, would they be able to pull your boat up? Or would it just drag it through the water?

Mast Foam and Mast Floats

I have never seen Jib floatation but I do have some experience with alternatives...

Alternative #1 - Foam the mast:
My Mod 2 Capri had a urethane plug in the top of the mast. By the time I purchased the boat the plug had deteriorated and the mast was no longer water tight. The first time I capsized (single handed) the mast filled with water and the boat turtled. To correct this problem I removed the main halyard pulley from the top of the mast, removed the deteriorated plug, replaced the plug with spray foam (from the hardware store), replaced the pulley, and the mast was water tight. The mast now acts as floatation and helps to prevent turtling. The nice part about this is it does not affect the boats weight or the air flow around the mast or sails. Check your mast to see if it is sealed. If you want a little extra floatation see Alt #2.

Alternative #2 - Mast Float:
Another Capri owner where I sail did an easier solution. He modified a mast float designed to fit a HobieCat and attached it to the top of his mast. The float provides a lot more floatation than my "foamed" mast. The mast float is aerodynamic and does not affect sailing performance. I am not sure if this is "Class Legal" as he does not race his boat. You could always remove it on race days.

Hope these ideas help.

nerf football

I was told by and old sailor to putt a nerf football on top of the mast. With a patato net bag to hold it. I been making a little aluminum bracket to hold the nerf football in place and let is spin at the same time. Sorta like the Hobie "bob" but $169 cheaper. I have a link some place with the way to make these hardwear, i cant find it at these moment. I also thought about trying to cover part of the mast with a fat wakie stick, these float the same as the nurf ball but can be raped round the mast or stays, Anyways dont know if these stuff well work but im dinking with it, I to had the boat turtle. Corse my wife steped on the mast before she whent into the water
