boom line

I was at the Annapolis Boat Show last weekend and was looking at the new Catalina 14.2. It seems to have a topping line (?) [a line from the top of the mast to the aft end of the boom]. Mine doesn't have one. Is this a new feature? Is it advisable to get one? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

At a show the main halyard is taken to the end of the boom for a topper to give the boat a nicer look. I think a "boomkicker" is a cleaner solution vs the topper. http://www.boomkicker.com/Bk_specs.htm#312/400

I have a boom kicker and it works well. Mine does not look or FEEL too good. The fiberglass rods are fraying and if you rub against it you will know it for a few days! Mine is probably12 years old and the previous owner was not into covering the boat all summer!

I have never seen or used a topping line so I have nothing to compare the BK to.

Note: When using the boom kicker and releasing the line holding down the front of the boom, remember to support the rear of the boom or it will pivot on the boom kicker and go BOOM!

Is that picture, a picture of the new and improved capri 14. If it is.....wouldnt it make all of hte old boats obsolite (spelling?) ?

Isn't your boat like the one pictured above ? Actually I think thats a Coronado 15 , but I really don't know as it is an image that I could find of a boom kicker. It would be nice to be sailing a boat rigged that well that needs traps. Not obsolete.
