Class Politics Class Measurer Is Going To Be Busy At The Worlds

The Laser Worlds in Germany can accommodate 180 boats max for the men's event. So far, 175 sailors have applied. But only 40 brand new boats are offered for charter. This implies that many will be forced to bring their own boat, or charter from another source.

I imagine that the Measurer is going to be busy inspecting all those not so brand new boats; bring him/her some pilsner!

PS: the charter fee (725 British Pounds) seems high to this non-European bystander.

... bring him/her some pilsner! ...

From my very subjective "GER/Westfalian" view:
I would say: They (the GER ILCA/ISAF measurer) prefer "Lübzer Pilsener" or "Hasseröder Pilsener" as those dishwater originally is brewed at former "East GER" (/"GDR", that in former times was owned by the Russians...). We, in Westfalia (at former "West GER"/"FRG", in former times was owned by Brits, Am's, Frenchmen) more prefer "Krombacher Pilsener" or "Veltins" or "Warsteiner" or "Bitburger", as this are tasteful GER beers. ;)
At Bavaria (must be somewhere at south GER, I guess) the natives there like to drink "Erdinger"-White beer, if they are from the region Frankenland,. The other Bavarians more like to drink Hofbräuhaus Beer ("HB") or "Franziskaner"-/ "Loewen-" Bräu, I guess.

725,-BP is about 869,- €!! I plan to buy one of the charter boats, aft the Ladies finished their competitions at Boltenhagen. I keep your charter cost info in mind, to try to reduce the sellling price of those charterboats ;) ;)
Thanks for that info, 'Wave'!

Cheers!

P.S.: Don't take me to serious. I'm kidding a bit, about my sailing friends at the "new 5 Bunderslaender" and my also very good sailing friends at Bavaria! ;)

I don't think measurers look at charter boats much differently from non-charter boats. People chartering boats usually supply their own rigging, and I would guess that is where most of the fun is.

Good point.

Regarding the charters, the forty new hulls will be chartered twice, first for the Men's (as full-rigs) Worlds, then for the Women's (as radials). That (1450 BP) appears to be a profit making venture for LP/Maclaren. And we all know they need that... :)

Just a couple of points to keep in mind regarding the charter boats for the Men's and Women's Worlds:
1) LP/Maclaren are NOT involved in the charters, in fact they are the reason these events are breaking from the traditional supplied boat event. The local German dealers are handling the charters, meaning they have bought the boats at normal dealer prices from LP and are assuming all risks in chartering for these two events.
2) Remember that the charter is for a total of 11 days - 4 practice days and 7 days of racing. Per racing day the fee is around 66 GBP, or around $100/day. Try finding a charter of a new boat at a North American event for $100/day.

I agree that if this is the model going forward that measurement is going to become a far more time consuming process. At the Olympic level one has to be far more concerned over the potential for modifications to hulls, spars and sails. Obviously, this all goes away with supplied boat events.

Thanks for the clarification/correction regarding the source of the 40 boats available for charter.

Basically no parts available in europe. No booms, top masts, sails, radial lowers of the stuff I´ve asked for. List is certainly longer. One solution in the emergency: Approve replica parts. NMOD.

If you need a particular part to go sailing, and the legal part isn't available at all in your region, then I think you have no real alternative but to buy a replica part. I've been a strong opponent of replica parts for racing in the past, but if the builder is in such dire straits that they can't even sell you legal sails, masts or booms, then I say buy replica ones.

However, under the class constitution, with the builders having an effective veto over any rule changes, I don't think there is any way the class will ever approve replica parts.

By the way, I see that this forum is supported by advertising placed (and presumably paid for) by one of the major suppliers of replica parts. We sailors need to start supporting the folk that support us.
