Laser sailing in Charleston SC

My son is interested in learning to sail, and he lives in Charleston SC. Where can he get adult sailing lessons there, in a Laser or other boat?

My wife and I raced lasers in Charleston last year. There is a beautiful yacht club in the middle of the city where they give historic tours. I seem to remember is was called Carolina Yacht Club or something like that.

They had a TON of dinghies (many different classes). Was so nice, I almost wanted to move.

Not sure how to get a ride, other than calling the fleet captain and hitching a ride-along.

Good luck

Thanks for the idea. I found out from another sailing forum that the College of Charleston has a great sailing team and that they offer non-credit sailing lessons to adults. I think it would be best if my son has a few lessons under his belt before he shows up somewhere to crew, and the Charleston Yacht Club would be a good place for that, I'll bet.

I am a local laser sailor in Charleston. I do private lessons if your son is interested. I am certified and have been sailing lasers full time for about 6 years. I taught at a yacht club for 3 years. If he just wants to get out and sail with some other guys that is ok too. My buddies and I try to practice a few times a week and do all of the local regattas and travel a great deal. We would love to have him tag along if he wants.

As far as the college of charleston goes... The adult sailing classes are in j22s with reefed sails. It is basically for people who just want to go out and cruise all day. If he wants to learn how to sail dingies or race you should look at something else. There are some adult classes at the James Island Yacht club but I think they are about over for the summer I think.

PM me if you have any questions.
