Laser Training

In your tacks, you need to squeeze the extra mainsheet in quicker and try not to let the mainsheet out when you swap hands. :)

you definitely need more roll, the pump you're getting is barely anything... just try to work on getting more roll

As said above, you need much more roll in the tacks/gybes. You also need to be more fluid in the hand changeover during manouvres.

HMMM, The last one looked like there was too much wind and too little weight to get a fully efective roll tack down, as for the others, sheet in quicker with a quick trim pulling your hand with the sheet past your head in an upwards motion and roll a little farther. For the gybe, bear away just enough so that you can pull the sail across with a quick trim to the sheet but not enough to your not on a dead run post gybe.

Thanks for your comments. With the gybe, the exercise was to gybe run to run, that's the only reason why I did that.

The gybe was good, but when I gybe, I usually bear away until the sail is just about to come across and I pull it over with the sheet.

Video 1: slide your hand up the mainsheet after completing the tack.. this allows you to: 1. straighten your body out, 2. release the main so it doesn't stall, and 3. make the hand switch easier, quicker and smoother.
Video 2: Loosen your outhaul downwind A LOT more. be quicker on the hand switch.. in the breezy stuff, your technique could be dangerous!!
Video 3: Slide your hand up the mainsheet (see comment on video 1 lol) also: hike into your tack and hike out of it.. never not hiking
Video 4: Vang too loose.. You come out overpowered, because without vang, your sail is actually MORE powered up when you let the sheet out.. also.. slide the hand up the mainsheet so you can make that tiller pass without fighting it.. I'm talking HAND ABOVE YOUR HEAD lol

HERES A VIDEO OF ME DOING 1 IN LIGHTER AIR:

ENJOY!!!

the main thing is try to make your movements more fluid so you conserve momentum, in heavier air you need less roll while hiking hard to flatten the boat, when its really blowing you can actually stand up when you get to the other side and use the extra kinetic energy to blast out of the tack, the advanced laser dvd from the laser training center is pretty good

watch these guys,
there are 3 other videos from this race

Some things you can work on for better tacks: Trim your sail in just prior to the tack so you can pinch up and gain some extra height. For a light wind tack your track will be wider and tighten up as the wind increases. You definitely need more roll for the lighter breeze - cross under the boom as the sail comes over. As you go up to the new side ease the sail out a bit and hike out to flatten, then trim your sail. You should have your back foot crossing over the foot strap before the tack so as you come up on the new windward side you can throw yourself into the hike with one foot hooked under the strap. Lastly to make your hand exchange easier run some line through your front hand before the tack, that way you'll be able to easily make the exchange. Vaughn's tack shows this clearly - also how he has eased the sail through the tack, flattens, then trims in the sail. Good luck.
