Life of a Laser

I just wanted to find out how long a laser would be in racing condition if it was sailed 3 times a week.

there are many factors, suchas if you're in salt or freash water, if you take care of it, wind conditions etc... give us some more information

fresh water (lake michigan) and anywhere from 0-30 knots of wind. and it is well taken care of.

Another factor is your weight, every pound past the optimal 180 and you're increasing the degradation of the boat. I can attest to that.

Given your circumstances and assuming no traumatic event in the boat's life there's no reason it shouldn't stay in racing condition for 5 years.

ive seen some 10 year old lasers in good racing condition freashley polished every year and well looked after and ive seen some 1 & 2 year old lasers that minght struddle in a club race it really is down to if you get a good boat from laser there a bit hit and mis and if you look after it properley i own a 97 laser and its in fair condition good club racer but i wouldnt even bother entering a national event with it as its been raced hard almoast all its life and has exxessive wear on the mast pot and dings here and there and the gell is a bit unevan but as i say works well in a club race environment so really there is no answer to your question only variables. ps dont forget to polish and wax seal you can never look after your gel too much.

my boat (sail#11146) is still really fast and i can keep up with most of the new boats, bu it hasnt had much use for its age, and is still stiff

its a matter of the boat staying stiff and light, if it leaks (some new boats leak!) fix it, water inside the hull is never good, with proper care you can keep it in great shape and it will be competitive for along time

All depends on care! The better you care for it the longer it lasts. My boat is hitting 22 years old now and still can stay with the fleet no problem!
