CARBON TILLERS

I am looking for a new (or used) carbon tiller and I was wondering which was the best one at the cheapest possible price.

The most important qualities I am looking for is:
  • A low profile (so it doesn't interfere with the traveller blocks).
  • Strength. (Obviously)

I have been doing a lot of comparison shopping and forum searching for the best carbon tiller. I think it was pretty unanimous that the Acme Black Diamond Tiller is the best in strength and design. I waited for months to try and catch one used for sale, nothing ever turned up so I bought it new. The cheapest I have found it is online at Sailing Pro Shop for $180.

...and I don't work for Acme or Sailing Pro Shop by the way.

I have a rooster tiller which is great - low and strong, last for ages. Have not seen the acme to compare it against though.

I'm sure the Rooster is good but I use the Acme, its similar to the Rooster and its around $100 cheaper

The ACME Black Diamond Tiller is definitely the best around, I have two of them and they work like a charm, very strong and very skinny so your traveller can get nice and tight. Only problem is that they are hard to find, which is why i bought two when I could.

I use a rooster Carbon tiller that I think could have been the original on the boat in 2003.

No complaints at all it has performed brilliantly ever since I got it.
One small thing though is to make sure there's enough insulating tape on the wear plate, as I nearly lost mine one day when the tape fell off.

Strange you should say that mine nearly fell off the other day as well. I emailed Rooster who told me they are expoxied on so over time with the small amount of flex you will get they will come loose.

I have used a contact adhesive to stick it back on this time and it has held well so far.

I just got my rooster tiller extension and it fits perfectly in the rudder head.
It didnt have a hole in the back to fit the "sprint" though.
Do you drill a hole or does it stay in place anyway?

Mine fits well and is packed out with a sigle layer of tape to make it really tight in the rudder head. As long as your rudder dowhaul is secured, the tiller will stay in place. I've had mine for 5 years now and I'm very pleased with it.

Some people drill them, some people dont. If you drill you need to use a very sharp drill bit so you cut cleanly through the carbon.

I just ensure my downhaul is done tightly and I am careful when I release it coming ashore.
