I'm a 50 year old "Master" and would like to improve my Laser sailing... at least enough to beat the local Snipe sailors in handicap racing... and possibly beyond. No Olympic campaigns in the future, but I would like to get much better. Anyone have any recommendations on good Laser coaching camps, seminars etc. out there for the over 30 crowd? Thanks and thanks again.

I have attended these seminars , both based in Florida. They are aimed at intermediate-to-advanced will lots of drills, practice starts, and mock races. Cost is very reasonable. I highly recommend either one. You will probably need to contact them to get their latest schedule.

If you are looking for a Caribbean vacation, there is also Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. I have never been, but many people have gone and had a good time. The cost obviously would be a little higher.

Excellent Torrid. Thanks.
I'm going to check out the Dominican Republic. I have their video and have learned a lot from it... first hand experience on the water though would obviously be a whole new ball game.
Thanks again. Maybe I'll see you in Cabarete...
Cheers

please update me on how it went. I really want to go to a laser camp as well with many starts, many races, and days of drills... with moderate+ level racers

do they still offer the seminar in texas? I went to the guy's website and couldn't find anything but a store that sells boats and parts

They run a great seminar in a beautiful place. It was a great x-mas present from my wife.

We had an instructor from Cabarete come to our club for a short 2 day training camp. It was awsome and improved my skills quite a bit even after sailing the boat since 1983! After 2 days of light air training and drills for a solid 4 hrs I was 10 times more sore than after any heavy air masters championship event. The after sailing debrief and watching the video was fantastic. I"d love to go to the DR for the 4 day clinic in some breeze!

It's a two day trip getting to the DR from Kansas, but I'm looking and thinking about it for Sring Break 2012. Thanks for the post Rob... good to hear from someone first hand that also sounds to be a "master."
Cheers

I've been to Cabarete and it was great. I've also been to International Sailing Academy in Puerto Vallarta which is also great. I definitely recommend both.

One advantage of ISA is that it is all-inclusive so you don't have to worry about feeding yourself and with Leah's cooking I ate better than I ever do at home. Vaughn & Chris also do a great job of coaching and the location has great conditions and is a little easier to get to from the West Coast.

If I could I'd go to both every year. But unfortunately I have to work. Stupid work! C'mon winning lottery ticket! ;-)

Is it dangerous to be in Mexico with all the drug related violence?

Only if you're in the drug trade. Don't believe everything you hear on the news - their job is to make you afraid so you stay home and buy the crap they are advertising.

The areas you're likely to be as a tourist (ie Puerto Vallarta area for the clinic) aren't any more dangerous than any other areas you're liable to be in (like many cities in the US). It's just like travelling anyplace - pay attention to your environment, stay out of sketchy neighborhoods or dark streets late at night, don't flash cash or other valuables, don't be a jerk to the locals, don't go looking for trouble etc. In other words, use common sense and you'll have a fun, problem free vacation.
