My first Laser

Hello,

I the new owner of a 1991 Laser. It has been sitting for many years and looks rarely used and completely stock. I have not sailed in many, many years and am looking to just get the boat in the water to get my sea legs back.

Here are my questions/issues:

I'm missing the large traveler block (black). Anyone have one to give away? A replacement one is about $25 with s/h but I'd rather save the $ to upgrade later.

I've read the rigging manual don't understand the "mast holddown". I think I'm missing the material for that too. Any pics of how it's done?

Lastly, I've read about mast stap horrors and have seen kits/parts to reduce problems like wear tapes and discs. Any advice on what to get?

Thanks,
Ed

Thanks for the reply. Been there, confused me even more. Nothing there looks like my stock rigging.

you probably have the original setup, check this video [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnMmADU8g5I&feature=related"]YouTube - ‪Laser rigging w/captions‬‏[/ame] i think this one will help you get started!

I bought the large block for something like $11 and a couple $$ for shipping, there is one on ebay right now. The sides are plastic, and I think the original was aluminum.

That vid was helpful but didn't show any mast holddown.

Any ideas about my last question?..the mast step hole protection?

someone correct me if i'm wrong but i don't think that there is a mastholddown on the original setup, only the mainsheet and the cunningham.

The mast hold down is just anything tied from the mast to the boat to keep it from coming out. On the new setup you just tie a little line from the new deck pulley plate u thingy up over the mast tang and back down.

On the old setup just find something you can tie from and over that and back down. Or just not worry about it.

It's only necessary if you're racing. The cunningham should keep the mast on anyway.

For the mast step I would just buy two things. Buy the metal disc and epoxy that in the bottom (after cleaning it out with a bit of acetone) and then put the little teflon disc in the bottom that spins easy, you just lay that in there.

To clean the mast step just tape a rag around a batten. To put the disc down there, put some epoxy on the bottom of the disc, tape the disc (lightly) to the bottom of a batten, and put it down there. Then use another batten to hold the disc down while you pull the other batten off. You can then set something heavy on it, like the mast bottom section, to hold it down for a while, but it's not necessary.

My laser is an '87, and I use the old setup (until funds provide otherwise). I don't bother with the mast tie-down, and only use the cunningham to keep things in check.

I have an '89 and upgraded the rigging myself, never have I found the need for a mast hold down, even when capsized with the mast point straight to the bottom, cunningham does a good job of keeping it in place.
