Transporting from Ohio to Texas

I posted this a few months ago, and never got any suggestions.

I held off , and now, I've got the bug to get my uncle's boat down here for my 9 year old daughter to start Laser sailing. Junior sailing is just a couple months away, and I thougth it would be better for her to use a beater boat vs. mine that is a newer model boat.

My best guess was to crate the thing up and ship it down LTL. Any suggestions?

Anyone coming down from the Cleveland area to Dallas anytime soon?

Thanks!

Check the J22 website for possible Clevelanders headed to TX.

I don't know nuthin about boxin up no boats.

A 9 year old in a laser? Unless she has got a fair bit of sailing experience i doubt it would be great. Even for a 4.7 she will likely be undersized and have no junior fleets. What is the predominant class being used in the junior fleet? I think that would be the best way to go. (Buying that sort of boat to use)

Get an Optimist for your daughter. That's the boat kids use for learning and racing.

I'm not so sure about this. I believe the 4.7 rig provides a platform that, (if properly promoted) could obsolete the Opti or at least get kids moving out of that class by the time they are 10 years old at the most.

I think it's crazy there are some 15 year olds out there still cramming themselves into an opti when the 4.7 rig is available. It would also save the parents a ton of money to get their kids into a Laser over an opti.

I have three kids that love sailing. The eldest one is 14 years old and weights 45 kilos. He can handle my Laser with a 4.7 rig when the wind is not so strong. The younger 2 (10 and 8) simply can't; it is impossible for them to right the boat after a capsize.

Good to know. So, your 14 yr. old at 45 kilos can right the boat if it capsizes? I'm trying to get a handle on the minimum weight needed to right a laser. Thanks.

He could, I've seen other kids do it. Nevertheless, it's much easier for them with an Optimist.

I've seen large kids weighting 60 kilos suffering in an Optimist. A Laser is much better for them.

From the experience collected at our club, with 50 kilos a Laser becames a good choice.

toper topaz's are the best learner boat. that is what i learned on and my 11 year old sister is now. ther built like a rock and are easy on every point of sailing from righting to gybing. im not sure if there is as big a class for them in america

Never heard of it so I don't think they are here at all.

im 13 and i weigh 140 pound and ive never a problem righting my boat... but at nine i would definitely recommend an optimist, i never sailed a opti and i regret it because so many people who are getting into lasers after sailing optis can beat me.
