49 boats started the series this morning in very light winds of around 5 mph but the sea breeze has returned at around 10 but oscillating quite a bit.
The fleet is still out and having the second race now with one more to follow.
I will be back with the scores later this afternoon.
Weather if fantastic...in the high 70's with around 10 mph winds.
A big THANK YOU!!!!! to West Marine in FWB for replacing my VHF so I can again hear the RC and know what is going on.

Yes, a big thanks for the updates. My guess is a lot of the Central/South American sailors are preparing for the Pan Am games - that is certainly what the Mexicans are doing as there are few or no Sunfish in Mexico. Bill Draheim is actually an old name in the class; from back in the late '70s I think. I believe he is now a sailmaker. I don't know how old his son is, but he seems to have learned from his dad. Heavy fog this morning early that held up racing until noon. Forecast of 5 was way off with the same 10 returning from the south. Shifty 180 ~ 230 back and forth all day.
4 races held and really stirred the results.
Bill Draheim (50) is sailing against his son Stu (16) and they both seem to keep winding up on the scoresheet beside each other - he has a loft near Dallas.
South Americans are fighting it out for the chance to take on Paul Foerster for the Pan Am games trophy.
Here are Fridays results.

Regarding the Central American, South American and other non-US competitors at the Midwinters: A lot of the participation is due to the upcoming Pan Am games in Mexico. Beldar had it almost right, but not quite. Sailing in the Pan Ams works similarly to the Olympics. A country must first qualify to have an entrant in the games, then they have to determine who their entrant will be. In the case of the Pan Ams, 12 countries may enter sailors in Sunfish, and each country can have only one entrant. So the question is - which 12 Pan Am countries may do so? Over the past two years, various regattas have qualified countries for the Pan Ams. For instance, the 2009 South Americans qualified one country. An Argentinian won, so ARG has a Pan Am entrant. The 2010 Midwinters qualified 2 countries. Eduardo C. from Venezuela won, and an American (Tom Whitehurst??) was 2nd, so VEN and USA qualified. I believe the 2010 SAs qualified 3, and I think the 2011 midwinters qualify either 2 or 4, and I think the Worlds in Curacao qualify a couple.

Once a country qualifies, it is up to that country to decide who to send to the Pan Ams. The US had its qualifier last fall, and Paul Foerster won so he is going. I have no idea how the other countries do their qualifiers. But anyway the need for countries to qualify for the Pan Ams is helping drive this participation. I notice Cuba has a place reserved at the Worlds in Curacao and I am sure they will be trying to get qualified there. As far as I know, we have never had a Cuban entry at the Worlds.

The fwyc.org site has the final results posted, but they are only partly sorted making them really hard to use. I resorted them in Excel and made the attached PDF. Hopefully they are right. Congrats to Fernando on the win. Good to see someone from Puerto Rico back in Sunfish. Looks like Guatemala, Puerto Rico and Colombia are now in for the Pan Ams.

Looking at the results, Martin Vezina could have qualified Canada with a 15th or better in the last race, but he took a DSQ and dropped in the standings.

Thanks for making the results legible.

Congrats to Conner B., Tom W. (Florida) and Stewart D., Jamey R. (Texas) for being the top American finishers. Those Central and South Americans were really tough.

Todays 3 races were great! The fill in PRO did a fantastic job getting off the races before the 1 o'clock time limit.

The weather couldn't have been better for a full week of sailing. My Mom and man servant had a great time, but Mom did say that 19 races in 6 days might have been a but much.

A special thanks to Rita S., Susan K., Lee C., Anne E., and my Uncle Stu for rubbing my belly and holding me all week.

Hugs and Fishes to all my new friends,

Boudreaux
