    can these cracks be fixed?

Patience is key when buying a SF on a budget, if you're willing to wait and continually scan ads and craigslist eventually something far better is going to pop up. I got a nice '76 SF in sailable condition for $200 by waiting until I found the right posting.

    returning to sailing

Umm at the risk of stating the obvious on this forum, how about a Sunfish? If you want to sail Solo, make sure you get a trailer to go with it so you don't have to worry about cartopping by yourself.

    Tiller Extension Bolt Removal

Thanks for the suggestions! It turned out the special wire locking nut they had used had deformed and bitten into the threads of the bolt which obviously prevented it from turning so I ended up having to cut the nut off with a dremel tool.

    Tiller Extension Bolt Removal

Thanks but that was my first thought. I'm trying to find a non-destructive way to remove it, it'd be nice to reuse the hardware. Any other ideas short of cutting it off?

    Tiller Extension Bolt Removal

I'm in the process of replacing the broken tiller handle on my '76 Sunfish and can't figure out how to get the the tiller extension bolt out to reuse the extension on my new handle. I can't unscrew the nut because the bolt head is rounded like a carriage bolt and is free wheeling in the recessed...

    Eek! A mouse!

Hmm I wasn't quite sure what it was in post #4, I knew it resembled a tennis ball but I've never played tennis with a ball made of foam like you mentioned so I thought I'd state the obvious in case you were referring to a different type of ball or the OP was similarly uncertain. Some chopped...

    Trailer Design Feedback

I guess it's all a matter of perspective, I only spent $200 for the whole boat (Which is in good shape but not pristine by any stretch of the imagination) and $150 for the trailer so I've had a hard time justifying $150 for PVC. Are there any cheaper pipe options than PVC? I've been looking...

    Trailer Design Feedback

I've heard the recommendation to carry the boat upside down before, why is this better for the boat than bunks supporting the hull right side up near the chines? Any advice on how to carry spars/mast when trailering a SF upside down? I've looked at buying an 8' PVC tube to carry beneath the...

What should I expect to pay?

If you're willing to wait for a deal and do some digging for a poorly advertised boat for sale you can find some real steals. I picked up a '76 in good shape on Craigslist for $200 from a guy who was clearing out a storage unit and just wanted the boat gone. He had listed the boat in the body of...

Here are some quick day time pictures that might show things a bit better.

    Trailer Design Feedback

Well the trailer was apparently a deluxe model, it has a Torsion suspension so there aren't any leaf springs to remove. I don't think there is a way to adjust the load rating. Link to Manufacturer Specs...

    Trailer Design Feedback

Looking at your picture, it seems like your rear support is only about 6" farther back than I have mine setup. It's hard to tell from the pictures but I've only got about 3 or 4" of clearance between the bow and the winch so I don't have much room to shift it forward. I'd prefer a little space...

    Trailer Design Feedback

I recently acquired a Jet Ski trailer on CL for $150 that I've repurposed for my Sunfish. In the interests of getting on the water this summer, I decided to modify the Jet Ski bunk system and pad them with foam swimming "noodles" to hopefully cushion the boat. The rear six feet of the boat are...

    Stuck Drainplug

Thanks for all the advice, this group is fantastic resource! I finally decided to pop the whole assembly out as was recommended. I worked a very think screw driver underneath the edge of the drain and slowly worked it loose from the hull. The assembly was completely corroded, I doubt I would...
