I find sailing by the lee with the boom within the 90degree is key to dryness and speed in heavy wind. also a good, simple tip from the instructors at weymouth; toe strap really tight, leeward, trailing leg locked around outside, windward front leg inside, shin pushing forward. good strong base...
I wanted to get my Laser really clean and purchased some Trade Secret cleaner that, given the marketing, I wasn't particularly impressed with. Yes, the boat was cleaner, but I wanted to really get out some old stains in the non-slip. Used the above solution neat in the end as well as a dilute...
Vang point absolutely right above. I would like to emphasise fixing up 6:1 outhaul is well worth the trouble as one of the first things to do.
One negative point difficult to gauge on a used boat is metal fatigue: topmast sheered clean off after about a year or so in heavy windy. I was lucky...
Size and budget you sound like myself three years ago when I bought my boat. After spending time talking to a lot of people better qualified than I this is what I did:

i remember being out on pyramid lake in, i think, alberta and getting hit by a gale force hale storm within less than ten minutes of seeing the dark clouds approach. nice picture and due respect to canadian lakes. our wives all thought we had lost our minds as well.
Just thought Id share my first two races ever in a Laser, in a blizzard.
After much discussion in the club house looking at the snow hitting the window from the gusts, and unsettling white crests on the waves created from water bouncing off the dam wall, four of us launched in Laser'. Never...
Advice needed on how do you grow a Laser fleet.
Background:
Im a relatively new sailor and joined a good club with good people but where the Laser is very much a second fleet. God supportive group in the primary fleet though.
2012 was a good year and we have seen the odd race approaching double...
My Rooster hikers with armour are great. My season: three races, two back to back, F4.5+ and by second race can see some of the competition in wetsuit only waring down. I did have a small problem with one set, didn't ask for a new set, and Rooster insisted on sending a new pair asap.
