On a pre '72 SF (ie: without the rear storage compartment) you will need a 4" port in the rear wall of the cockpit. Mine is centered vertically and inline with the bailer. After installing the port and the hiking strap, I have not opened it again.

As you can see from picture 3, the cat bag has just a drawsting closure that is in no way water tight.
The port lid, o-ring, port ring are what keeps things dry. The cat/fat bags are not water proof, just uncoated nylon (similar in weight to the sail), and will let water condence on the bottom of the lid. You need to use a ziplock type baggie if you really want to keep stuff dry. Double them up...
