I think your alright. If you really want to go all out lightly sand the marine-tex and put one or two layers of glass around the step. The marine-tex is really great stuff. I use it all over my laser.

If you want to clean that tan stain off your boat use Y-10 gel. I had the same problem and now my hull looks brand new. I fresh coat of cleaner wax will do the hull good as well.

I have a small "pelican" waterproof case that I tie to the back end of my hiking strap. Very effective and inexpensive. If you want to look at the case just go to pelican.com and find the right size case.
