    Rudder options

Trace it out and take your wood to your local high school's Woods shop. I work in a high school and teachers are always looking for a little project to give a kid. Heck, they'd probably sand it down for you too.

Bridge piers creating a wind tunnel

Thought I would share a new experience I had the other day. I was on a rather large lake on a windy day. I was running with a 15+ mph wind having a great time. I came to a fork in the lake. One side had a bridge running across the channel. I thought it would be interesting to sail under the...

    Self Bailing Cockpit?

I never use my baler cause I never capsize, but did go over this weekend in about 20 mph wind trying to jibe. Ended up with about 6" of water in the cockpit after riting the boat. I was traveling fast, running with wind, so I thought the self baler would work well. I opened it but it did not...

    Retrofit question

I have two goals when I go sailing. One, have a blast on the boat. Two, drive home with dry feet. Not that I mind wet feet in the summer, but for some reason I get the competitive urg to back the boat just enough into the water that I can push off the trailer without touching the water...

A Theological Question Regarding Sunfish Rigging

I accidently did this on a very windy day last summer and as the haylard twisted around the boom, the tork was such that it ripped my bullseye of the top deck. By accidently, what happened was I failed to tie the mainsheet to the traveler and the sail swung around as I began a run down wind. I...

    Sunfish Boom Inside Diameter Question

Nope. Just muddy Midwest lake water. I have one if the blocks on the boom tearing away. I thought I would run a 6" piece of something on the inside and set it with screws.

    Sunfish Boom Inside Diameter Question

I once had a boom that had a wooden closet rod on the inside that fit nicely. I'm not 100% sure but I believe a chain link fence rail fits on the inside as we'll. I have a repair of my own I need to do and will look at these options soon. If it works, I'll report back.

    Spidercracks in hull

The advice I have seen on this forum is to not worry too much about spider cracks...... Embrace the character of an older boat and go sailing. However, I have repainted two boats, both with spider cracks, and it worked great to simply sand them out. Just be careful to not sand into the gel coat...

    Retrofit question

Sorry.... my last post went out prematurely. Let's try again. My retrofit protect is finally complete! I've had several delays due to work schedule but the process was actually quite simple. Making my own rudder also added to the time, but otherwise it could be done on a Saturday morning. The...

My retrofit protect is finally complete! I've had several delays due to work schedule but the process was actually quite simple. Making my own rudder also added to the time, but otherwise it could be done on a Saturday morning. The installment of the inspection port was simple. I had a second...

    What's this old-style rudder worth?

Good feedback. I will probably try e-bay once I have time to figure that out. Thanks!

    What's this old-style rudder worth?

I am upgrading my rudder on my '69 sunfish and now have an extra pre-72 rudder system I'd like to sell. But I have absolutley not idea what it's worth. I've seen parts sold on this forum but don't remember seeing the package deal to see reference. E-bay seems to have what I think are...

    rudder repair advice

The crack in mine was not as severe but I did the same repair last spring. I drilled holes and glued wooden dowels. I sailed in heavy wind several times last summer and had no problem with the crack expanding. Here's a birds eye look at the edge of my rudder.

    Retrofit question

Thanks again for the tips. This is a small detail I almost overlooked that would have been costly. Sailcrafti, I just sent you an e-mail. Thanks for your offer. I think I will also try to make some just for spare since I have material I think might work. But it would be nice to have the official...

    Retrofit question

Thanks for the clarification. The washers did not come with the parts I ordered. I think I'll be find what I need and my local hardware store. Just finished cutting and shaping my new rudder today. I'll report in once I have a finished product, but need several days to stain and varnish the...
