For the 2010 Masters Worlds in Hayling Island I flew from the US to London with my tiller and extension in a fishing rod holder. It went as checked baggage and counted as an extra bag. It cost $50.00 each way.

An easy way to get a tube to hold the tiller and extension is to purchase a fishing rod container. Fishing supply stores such as Bass Pro Shops carry a variety. US Airways has a policy regarding sports equipment. Other airlines are probably similar. They do not specifically mention sailboat...

Rob, With the radial sail it was not survival mode for me. It was actually a lot of fun and a lot of physical exertion.
