The upper boom should be all the way to the top of the mast. You do have a daggerboard in, right? If you do have a daggerboard, then you need to let out on the halyard. Sailing a sunfish in those winds can be fairly difficult.
This forum has discussed this in-depth. For the most part the recommendation has been Rustomeum TopSide Marine. There is no need for Rustoleum Boat Bottom with these small boats. There is a Rustoleum Marine Primer that you should use as well.
Pictures would definitely help. We'll be able to determine if the cracks are in the gellcoat or the fiberglass. Neither would be too much hassle, though.
Better finish on wood that's constantly submerged? Others may have thought it would be of advantage in racing, but I don't think it would make any noticeable difference.
According to one review on HD, the NeverWet does not hold up under sunlight and causes chipping. Certainly a concern for a boat. I would love to try it but not if it will make by boat look worse than it is. The daggerboard and rudder would probably work, though! I might put it to the test for...
Had the same issue on mine, but with a few failed patches on top. I cut the whole area out and took a wood shim and glued it to the inside as a temporary splint while I put in new fiberglass. I covered the shim in sheetrock joint tape for added grip. After that, I just patched normally with...
Scary. This is why I carry a knife with me. I will actually be buying a dive knife for this season so that it is strapped to my ankle for quick-draw access. Where I sail there are fairly high winds and odd wind patterns so it's not uncommon to capsize. I second danpal I have a carabiner holding...
Well luckily this wasn't my first time out. Being an Eagle Scout, I took a sailing class at camp 3 or 4 years ago. Those boats were probably just as old, at least the one I used didn't have a storage compartment. Man i felt sorry for those boats. Cracks and leaks all over.
All thanks to you! I will have to check back with you next summer for a dagger board....I sort of hit a sneaky rock haha. All the parts fit perfectly even the botom mast cap we were worried about since it is a Phantom mast. If anyone is wondering Phantom masts are horrible without a bottom cap...
Finally got my 1966 Sunfish out on the water last week and it was great! After doing some fiberglass repair, there wasn't a single drop of water inside. The only thing i had trouble with were the ropes, which I replaced after having to be towed by a boat due to a line breaking. Next summer I...
