I bought a trolling motor and deepcycle battery and fashoned a set of tie downs in the cubby to store them when not needed. I only pull them when the winds fail to bring me home. I've not tested it but I'm confident the rig will hold in a capsize.
Hummmm
The Humming CB is normal and occurs at about 4.2 Kts. It is the board causing the noise and you can reduce it by lifting the board a few inches. The fastest my mod 3 has gone is 9.1 kts, per my GPS. Once I'm above 5 Kts I begin raising my CB about 10% for every knot above 5 kts which...
Go with the Sloop Rig 14.2. You can sail it with the jib furled and the main open until you get more comfortable with it. I sail mine single handed all the time and when the winds get above my comfort zone I furl the jib and keep going. You will learn more and enjoy sailing more with the...
I would pass on the 140 and go for the 146. I personally don't like Hunter boats but from what you stated for your goals I think the 146 would be a good sub for the 14.2. You won't get the level of excitement you would get from the 14.2 but you will get the room, safety, handling and basic...
I've never flipped a boat the size of a 14.2 but I know the fore deck won't support the weight so be sure to use three or more padded saw horses. Let us know what you decide and how it turns out.
Glen-L 15
These are nice looking boats! No doubt it would be the bell of the ball on most lakes and well deserving of the pride you would garner in building it. Everybody loves a wood boat but few love them enough to maintain them. I love the simplicity of my Capri. I spend more time...
Trouper 12 and the Storm 15
Pros: Both boats are very nice looking and roomy boats, Easy to sail, and safe for the family.
Cons: Both boats are high maintenance boats. You will have to balance the time you spend sailing these boats with the time you spend maintaining them. As for the...
Cat Rigs
Bernardd: there are lots of variations on the Cat Rig but you've got the just of it. They're forward mast with a single sail. There easy to sail but they don't point up as clean as a sloop.
Bond: the capri 14.2 is easy to sail but you have to balance the boat by moving your crew...
14.2
The 14.2 is safe to beach but difficult to hall onto a trailer from the beach. Since it uses a center board instead of a dagger board you stand a good chance of damaging the skirt if you drag it up the beach. Last, the 14.2 has a generous cockpit but it's really designed for a crew of...
Topper vs Capri 14.2
The Topper series of boats are more in line with racing skiffs than the 14.2 but like the Topper the 14.2 is not a cruser/family boat. It sounds like a Catalina or Precision 18 is more in line with what you are looking for. The catch being that you plan to beach it...
Shackles
You can find them at West Marine. I use Harkin hardware for my jib, it cost about $6. And yes, you can use either the middle or most inboard hole on the bow plate to connect your jib. I use the middle hole, as probably most 14.2 sailors, to give me just a tad more reach.
Thanks. I'm torn on the idea. My thinking is that I will buy it and build a crate to stow it in the bow and only pull it out when I need a push. I think I can cut down the mount and not have to worry about tilting the motor.
