I have transported my 2 sunfish on a single trailer a few times. Assuming that the trailer is set up to provide good support a single sunfish, I have used foam blocks along the sides and at the bow and stern so as to be able to support the second upside down. This makes sort of a sunfish...
By "feather" I mean sand the cracks etc down so that it's a smooth transition from the sanded area to the orginal gel coat. As for the paper to remove the shine, I stand corrected, I used 120 grit (NOT 60) as the shop suggested. Removing the shine is something that will only take you 10...
I have re-gel coated two hulls, in each case the shop that sprayed the gel coat for me asked that I rough sand the entire hull (60 grit) just to remove the shine and then wipe down with acetone. In addition they suggested that any deep cracks in the existing gel coat be sanded down to the...
There are several threads on this forum that cover your exact question. Do a search on "wet sanding" or "hull repairs" for greater detail. If you have the dirt off it's time to do a little wet sanding. If the hull is free from deep gouges, chips or cracks you can simply wet sand with...
Niko,
It's great to see someone your age so interested in the sunfish. You are in the right place to garner all sorts of advice on improving the performance of the sunfish. You will be hard pressed to find a better or more knowledgeable group than available right here.
Now for my 2...
Chris2, the new style plastic bailer does not fit tight to the bottom of the hull. There is a gap of about 1/8" on both of the hulls I own. This does not effect the performance of the bailer at all.
I re-gel coated the hulls of both of my sunfish and the shop that did it showed me the Q trim. I bought a roll of 125' so I have some left over. It is simple stuff, I think that West Marine sells the same or similar product though I do recall it being pricey.
If you aren't going to be racing you can buy "aftermarket" rudders. Bill Tosh does an excellent job and stands behind his work. He sells finished and unfinished rudders. He will even do special orders, I had him add a 2nd dowel in the rudder I just bought from him. You can contact him at...
They are 3/16 rivets, a pack of 50 aluminum rivets is about $5.00 from the local home supply place. Get the long ones and some matching washers to put on the underside, if you have access. I think those that Supercub recommends are probably stainless and if you're going to be in salt water go...
Over the years I have moved my sunfish(es) in the backs of compact and full sized trucks without any problem. I always loaded it bow first into a corner and used a ratched strap across the transom under the top of the gudgeon. Slide the sail/spars/mast along side and secure with bungie cords...
I have never seen "sea board" but I have replaced wood backing on several boats using the remnants of one of those inexpensive white plastic cutting boards (for the kitchen). It cuts well with a regular handsaw and does not compress or absorb water. I use 5200 to hold it in place and have...
As a recreational sailor (only) I use the cam cleat on both of my Sunfish. I have read all the negatives above about them but for my money it's more comfortable and just as responsive. I keep the sheet in my hand at all times and have yet to be dumped because I wasn't quick enough. Fact is I...
Will, check out this site: http://teamvanguard.com/2005/base/content.asp?page=boats_parts§ion=boats&dir=core&boatid=6&part_category_id=1
That should lead you right to the page showing the whole assembly. The seal is shown as the dark ring just above the ball. It should be part of the...
If you buy the whole assembly new, you get one O-ring for the bottom and you get the flat gasket with the plug molded on a strap for use in the cockpit. Both of these act to seal the bailer to the hull. You also will get the ball and a soft foam seal for the throat of the bailer. The ball...
The gasket you are talking about is actually an O-ring. Your bailer should not leak when properly installed. As to the idea of reducing the profile of the bailer assembly by leaving the gasket out, it would seem that carrying around a few gallons of water would be worse than the extra 1/8 inch...
