Any pointers for when the boat tips over.

I was wondering about when the boat tips over as far as losing the mast and having it come out of its mount and sinking. If that is a possibility. I took my boat out for the first time with no sailing lessons in 10 - 15 mph winds and had a great time. By shear luck I made out and back without looking too foolish. I was amazed how much fun it is and how much there is to learn. Which makes it fun. But I can see how anyone could flip over without much trouble and was wondering what to watch out for "when" that happens.

Thanks

Peter

If the boat is rigged up correctly the halyard secures the mast to the deck. The rigging is also tethered by the mainsheet so long as you remember to tie a stopper knot in the free end of the line.

Check out Tag's resource list in this recent post...

Also, be sure to tether the daggerbord and insure the rudder is locked in properly.

...twice, just for good measure.

I'm going to throw my two cents in here too. Definitely practice righting your sunfish. Practice getting it back upright from a full turtle too. Practice having to get the daggerboard back in. THe more you practice with those weird situations that come up only once in a while (like losing the daggerboard) the less likely you will be to get panicy if it happens in bad weather.

ALSO! if you use a camcleat for the mainsheet, I advise hiking out while holding it. I flipped out of a sunfish years ago because my feet missed the lip when I went to hike out real fast. Forgot to let go of the tiller extension an the mainsheet was locked into the cam cleat. So I snapped the extension off and had to swim a good ways with is because it took a while for her to come into irons and stop. By holding the mainsheet even if it is locked into the camcleat, you should pop it lose naturally if you happen to flip out backwards like I did. (Don't forget to let go of the extension either!!!)

Most importantly, have fun!
