Re: My new Regatta Mobile

I take it from #8 you plan to cartop? Looks like you'll need to line up a basketball team to help lift the boat up there.

Re: My new Regatta Mobile

Any big regatta will have enough hands to help. I went with the standard height van, the other vans I looked at were the extra height models, and those would have been impossible to put a boat on.

Besides with the veggie oil kit installed I basically get to travel to these regattas for free. Which means I can trade Brews for help .

I cartop my Laser on a GMC Sierra. A ladder comes in handy for me to climb on the roof and walk the boat back when it is just me and my husband.

I have a diesel jeep. Tell me about the veggie oil kit.

Oh yeah, I'm going to tweak the title because I couldn't tell if you were talking about a car or phone. Mobile is Britspeak for cell phone.

Re: My new Regatta Mobile

No worries on the "mobile" .....

Check out the following forum on veggie oil .... everything you need is there, and there are several other "systems" and "installers" out there around the world.

http://www.frybrid.com/forum/

The key is having a good source of waste veggie oil ...... and a good installation/filtration capability.

Send me a message and I can send you pictures and information when I get everything set up.

We talking home-brew diesel here? Look into the tax situation if you do it. I've read some states claim they are owed fuel tax on biodiesel. It's modern day moonshining!

No Bio-diesel here. Its taking Waste Veggie Oil and then filtering/dewatering, it can then be used in a second tank of a diesel vehicle as long as you can heat the oil up to about 180 degrees.

Washington state has an exemption currently that allows washington residents to use fuel "additives" which this counts as.

Lucky me !!!!!!!

Dodge Sprinter 2.5 turbo diesel would be a dream regatta vehicle. Keep us informed about the interior fit out.

Just picked it up and its sweet!!!!

30 MPG all the way back from Seattle at 75 miles an hour and it drives like a big SUV.

I just bought Yakima towers on craigslist and going to put a system together were I can load the boat from the back with stern on the ground and bow in the air. Envisioning a padded roller system on the yakima racks that would allow me to lean the boat bow up. Then pick the stern up and push the boat up on to the top of the rig.

Not sure how well it will work, but I have to figure something out because these standard sprinters are "big" vehicles. Can't beat the gas mileage, sleeping space, and comfort though. Imagine after racing being able to hang your clothes up and turn the diesel heater that I am going to install to dry everything out. In salt water I envision being able to wash me things with fresh water and have them dry by the morning. As well as being toasty myself, although it might be kind of like a sauna:p.

Our regatta mobile is an old Toyota/Winnebago camper. At 21 feet its not so large as to be a problem anywhere yet comfortable to stay in. Has a head, shower, full kitchen with nice size fridge..........We have a propane furnace, fridge and stove so don't even need shorepower unless we want A/C.
Nice to be able to jump in your own hot shower after racing and not have to live out of a dufflebag in some motel. We can roll in late and just crash rather than go find the room. In the morning we can have a leasurely breakfast and not go hunting for food.
Unless you have tolls to consider we have found that we get better gas milage trailering a Laser than car topping We have found that to be true in several vehicles. Plus we have a 3 boat trailer so often take an extra boat or two which helps with fuel costs.

If you can find a good one, the Sunraiders at 18 feet were really nice for this type of thing.

This van will be used for other things. Like if I get laid off I can do landscaping/construction/or delivery. This is why I went this route.

Regarding the engine mods, you might also check out a company called GreaseCar. It is located in CT and itts founder pioneered the use of fryer oil in diesel cars.

Yeah I know who they are. Seattle's Frybrid is a little closer, support wise, and I also like the Frybrid system better than any other vendor.
