Master’s Midweek Madness Regatta – 12/13 February 2008
US Sailing Center – Martin County, FL

Forty-two Laser Masters descended upon the US Sailing Center in Jensen Beach, FL. Fresh after a full lay-day of recovery from the Florida Masters Championship regatta, the Indian River greeted the sailors with more of the same solid mid-teens sailing, this time under sunless skies. PRO Don Lasky ran a quick skipper’s meeting and then it was off to the races. With a weather shore near to the left side of the course, much of the front of the fleet for race one’s first beat came from this side working its lefties and flatter water. As the top mark neared, a mid-twenties blast with monsoon-like rain plastered the fleet, wreaking its havoc. DOM-coded sails must stand for “dominate”, as Ari Barshi and countryman Jorge Abreu lifted off and away on the reaching legs of the twice-around triangle course. By the bottom mark (for the peloton), the top boats were gone, as was the breeze. The fleet completed their second lap in well under ten knots, Barshi and Abreu one-two’ed with prior weekend-winner Mike Matan third. For race two, the breeze switched back on to mid-teens and John MacCausland found the left-side’s sweet spot and cruised to the bullet, with Matan and Barshi in tow respectively. Race three’s ticket to the left-to-left-middle went to Ryan Minth, with Matan scoring another deuce and Brian Raney rounding out the top three. Barshi scored what would be his drop-race, a four, while MacCausland drifted back to twelfth. Four quick lightning bolts just past the top mark and resounding thunder sent the fleet in a bit earlier than anticipated. At the end of the first day, Matan and Barshi had clearly established themselves at the top of the heap, with the NA Master’s handicap helping Barshi to the top spot.

Day two, Wednesday, looked to be lighter and more from the west. But by the time the first race got off it was almost a look-a-like from the prior day. SIDE NOTE: It rained almost the entire time. Sometimes dropping visibility to less than forty meters. Amazing that this had not been noted prior, as it was prevalent enough that some sailors were complaining about the watered down beer. Anyway, it rained, heaps. The look-a-like conditions duped many into looking for the left-side sweet spot. Trouble with that strategy was that it was all about the right side, all day long. Minth wised up to this first, partially thanks to getting to the starting area BEFORE the one minute gun, and clicked off his second consecutive bullet. Of course, big guns Barshi and Matan were right behind in order. Matan reportedly sailed through the finish line which according to the Sailing Instructions was “closed”, which heightened tensions. Race two, with all the secrets of the right now in plain view, found the regatta’s leaders going down in order, Barshi (M), Matan (AM), and MacCausland (M). The monsoon only increased with the breeze and the thoroughly soaked sailors found their way blindly back to the US Sailing Center for a no-throw-out, five race series. David Frazier (GM) scored a consistent 4-7-6-9-16 to win his bracket and fifth overall while host/founder David Hartman (GGM) took his regatta ending 6-9 scores to eight overall and top Great Grand Master. The protest committee granted Matan redress, agreeing that “closed” was ambiguous, while the remainder of the fleet drained the remaining beer under cover (to keep for watering down their beverages). Another great event held by USSC-MC, led by Director Peter Strong. All Masters in attendance are looking forward to drying out.

Great report, Ryan. You make me glad I didn't go out the second day. I hadn't realized it rained that much, as I spent a good deal of the time in a seafood restaurant drinking iced tea and eating salad and yakking it up. I do a recall a skies opening up downpour.

I talked to Mike Matan to get the story on his protest. We were given oral instructions at the skippers meeting that the finish line was closed. He was present, but he had just been asked to give a short talk on sail trim for the expected conditions, and he was thinking about what he would say. He won his protest, not because it was ambiguous about what closed means, but because it was not written in the Sailing Instructions. For anything to be binding, it must be in writing in the SIs (only saying it won't do). Since Midweek Madness is supposed to have a coaching aspect, I think it would be cool that when/if there's a protest, that the RC explains the protest afterward as a teaching tool. My 2 cents.
