Class Politics About to get Fleeced? Hyannis NAs

I got an email from Peter up at Hyannis as a registrant. It talked about how great the restaurant is at the club, and making reservations in advance, and told me that I would be able to BUY a wonderful breakfast on site.

A look at the NOR shows that we get dinner on a single night of this four day event. The early entry fee was $175. No mention of a souvenir/T-shirt.

Thanks to this email, I'm now wondering if I'm about to get fleeced at this event! What will I be getting for $175? With over 200 entries, that's a lot of scratch to run a regatta - $35K - even with expensive gas.

Hyannis better not expect that a single "good" dinner is going to cut them any slack. For this price, I'm expecting all of the drinking water, PowerBars, and snacks I can swallow while afloat, plus a spiffy souvenir/T-shirt!

VALUE still needs to be considered when pricing these events.

I'll write back after the event with a post-regatta opinion, but my "fleece-o-meter" is already going to be set to hyper-sensitive!

new england in the summer, cheap ? right.
i wouldn't look for anything more than water on the water. except for the lunch they will throw at you each day.
one nice dinner and the awards presentation. sounds about right. the facility is a good place to sail from however. you got that going for you.

That price tag and the cost of hotel rooms was the main reason I'm not there. That's way too expensive .

The EARLY entry fee was $175? I hate to think what the late entry fee would be.

I've gone to all kinds of regattas and experienced many extremes of cost. There have been some $20 regattas that I felt were a rip-off, and some that cost more than $100 that I thought were great deals. Still, I think it is just a fact of life that any regatta with "Nationals" or "North Americans" in the name is going to demand a premium entry fee. It is up to the hosting yacht club to make it worth the money.

Late fee was an extra $50.

On the one hand people try to tell me sailing is expensive. Then a thread forms whining about an entire weekend that costs under $1000.

Guys who go to NASCAR events blow a couple hundred just for the day and they don't even get to go out on the racecourse and drive.

Get a grip.

Next year I think the Laser NA Champs should be priced at $1000 just for the no frills entry. On site parking and boat storage should be extra. launching should be extra. The RC should be paid at least $100 per hour apiece and the PRO oughta get $250 an hour.
Support boats should be charged $2500 for permits to come within one mile of the course and each support boat should be limited to one competitor. The support boats should be anchpored in a designated "pit stop" area and the "pit" should only be open during designated periods.
NO outside food or beverage should be allowed on the land facilitles or aboard competitor or support boats. Those items should be sold at regatta owned concessions and the competitors should be required to prepay for those concessions.
Each sailor should be required to purchase a new laser for the event and that Laser must be purchased from the regatta organizers.
Pre registration should be required.

All protests must be filed on the inside bottom of an unopened beer can before the competitor's meeting.

That is a start. Anybody have more ideas?

Sorry Fred I disagree. The hosting clubs have members that pay annual significant dues that maintain the facility. Decent clubs can host events and make a little cash. I've organized a nice sized Laser event from scratch. I know everything that is involved and you can provide value to the competitors. We invest in our boats and gear, (like a golfer with their clubs) and when we go out to play a round/race we'll pay a greens fee, but there is a limit unless we are offered the opportunity to play pebble beach.

Interesting, our friends to the North can host a 3 day regatta, give dinner for 2 nights and charges less then half the $$$..

OTW Judge Fees ? Or has the American Peso gone down so much in value ?

Canadian Nationals ....

ENTRY FEE: $75.00 CDN ($60.00 if registered by 6/1/07)_______ Entry fee includes post race drink and snacks each day, Friday and Saturday night cookout, entertainment, trophies, and great racing.

I spoke with a couple guys at an event in NC this weekend who had been to Hyannis and they hope the Laser class NEVER has another event in Hyannis. TOO many Bluebloods that didn't really care for Laser sailors, WAY too much expense everywhere you turned and the sailing conditions weren't all that great either.

When you can get a great regatta for $45, why spend $200+?
