You should contact Tom Laube (TLaube at SLLBV dot com]; if you are a master and will be in the area on March 18-19, you should sign up for the California Masters (Laser Masters 2017 March 18 - 19 - mbyc.org). Then you should stick around as we'll be sailing somewhere the next week and then sail the Midwinter West in Marina del Rey.I am staying in Mission Bay, San Diego for about a month. Is there a place that I can rent a Laser for some day sailing on Mission Bay? Thanks for all advice.

Give UCSD's Mission Bay Aquatic Center a try. They'll give you a checkout lesson after which you can rent their lasers. Their boats are fairly old, but still fun to sail on Mission Bay. The other place to be aware of is the Catamaran Resort and Spa at the north end of Mission Bay. They rent Capri 14.2, Catalina 18, and Catalina 22's. They also have some nice catamarans for rent, but no lasers. -- Ed
Just my two-cents worth. While I love and prefer Lasers, I have several times rented and sailed the Capris from the Catamaran. No checkout, reasonable rates, and hey, any sailing on Mission Bay is fun, and in the Capri you can take a friend or three...Thanks Ed. Since my last post I have discovered the Mission Bay Aquatic Center. They require a 2.5 hour checkout before renting any sailboat, and the time is included in time one pays to rent the boat. Their Lasers do look old and have the old style rigging. I don't know if it is worth it to spend the money to show them that I can rig and sail a Laser for just some day sailing in an older boat. I have also checked out the Catamaran Resort. There is also a Mission Bay Sports Center near the Aquatic Center that rents 14 and 16 foot dinghies without any hassle about getting checked out, which may be the way for me to go. I was all set to go try them out last week when the weather turned cooler and foggy, so will try again in the next couple of days. Thanks again for your reply.

I agree. I have "soloed" that boat every time. (Just had a couple of riders along, but you can handle it yourself easily).Add just to add: I used to own a Capri 14.2 and solo-sailed most of the time. The ones the Catamaran rents have a fixed keel and are rigged with a furling jib, so they are even easy to solo. Go for it! -- Ed
