They'll sell a bunch of top sections at first to the early adopters. My prediction, a year from now someone with a broken top section won't be able to find a dealer with any in stock. Carbon or aluminum.

Official notice from ILCA:

New composite top mast section announced

This part bothers me a little:

"The new mast specifications have been developed in close cooperation between the approved Laser Builders, World Sailing and ILCA. Because the composite top section is class legal and it will not provide any advantage in performance on the water, neither ILCA nor World Sailing anticipate that the use of the composite mast will need to be restricted for any future events. If it is subsequently determined that the use of the mast needs to be restricted, this will be controlled by Notice of Race on an event-by-event basis."

Torrid... you beat me by two minutes :D

Questions: will the aluminium topmast be discontinued, sooner or later? And as the announcement talks about "the" new spar, will it be the exact same stick everywhere (manufactured in one place), or will there be "faster" Aussie/Euro/Japanese masts...?

if there is no advantage on the water, what is the whole idea and benefit of these top mast?
