Whats the deal with the Alcort Zuma? Hows its sailing abilities? Is it a good boat to learn on? What is a good price for a 1987 Zuma with everything but the trailer? I am new to sailing and trying to figure out what boat to buy that I could learn on.

What about a 12ft Howmar sailing dingy with a trailer and the works(Sail, lines, fins.) for $1000?

The Zuma looks faster than it is, it would be fine for learning however the first boat I owned was a Laser, someone was going to junk it at one of the local yacht clubs because it had a few leaks, I fixed it and sailed it for almost 15 years and loved it,

the zuma is disappointing when you compare it to a laser

I really didn't like the way the zuma is rigged and the sail small, not easily tuneable

SUNFISH. I regularly sail Capri 14.2, Laser, Butterfly, and Sunfish. My Sunfish is by far my favorite. Should be able to find one for less than $500

The 1988 Alcort Zuma Standard sailboat has a fiberglass hull and has an overall length of 12.92 feet. The width (or beam) of this craft is 51 inches. This boat is rigged as a Cat. The sail area for the sailboat is 65 square feet. The displacement for the boat is approximately 129 lbs. The draft of this sailboat is approximately 2'7". (Draft refers to the bare minimum amount of water needed to sail your vessel. If you are buying a sailboat, check the waters where you plan to sail to make sure they are not too shallow for the craft you plan to buy.) Sailing is a great activity and can provide you and your family and friends with many hours of enjoyment. To help ensure your safety, we highly recommend sailing classes since sailing can be a challenging activity where technique and skills are important.

Excuse me all, Looking for a little advice. I just picked up a used Zuma and trying to get it ready to sail again. Looks to be missing the Vang.
How critical is this for regular recreational sailing around the lake?

I have a Zuma with a full laser rig and new MK2 sail and an old 1974Sunfish with a new race sail and the Sunfish will run circles around the Zuma. The Sunfish is also easier to sail in both very high and very low winds. The Zuma also has a worse death roll going down wind than a real Laser.
The original Zuma vang has very little power, so sailing without it would be fine with the smaller 65sq/ft sail. Just don't let the sail out to a full 90* going down wind.
