Frostbiting in Boston

Taking one step further into madness, I have decided to try frostbiting this winter. Here in Boston, Cottage Park Yacht Club is reputed to run a very nice frostbiting series in Lasers and Interclubs. It's convenient; friendly; there's good racing; and by midafternoon you're done and either drinking beer in a warm clubhouse or proceeding with the rest of your Sunday activities.

Since misery loves company, I'm now eager to recruit a few others.... If you live in the Boston area and are thinking about trying frostbiting, I encourage you to check out the CPYC site, and get on their mailing list by visiting this Yahoo site.

I spoke to the usual organizer -- due to a couple of geographic moves, recent marriages, etc. they're hovering just below critical mass... about 5 interested people; a couple more and we'd be on our way to having a fleet.

The good news is that they're already organized -- there is interclub racing going on, so there is already a RC setting a course, crash boats, all that stuff -- all a group of laser sailors would need to do would be to show up and race and to volunteer for some of the work.

I'm not personally a member; apparently you don't need to be one to frostbite; the fee is I believe $125, you can use the facilities, which include a warm place to change clothes, shower, and have a beer after racing, and a place to store your boat.

While this lacks the 50-boats-on-the-line experience of Newport, it is, on the other hand, awfully convenient to Bostonians. You can drive there, get half a dozen races in, put your boat away, shower, and change, all without giving over your entire Sunday to it.

Let me know if you have any interest -- I don't claim to have any particular expertise in organizing this sort of thing, nor do I speak for the club or the fleet in any way -- I'm just a struggling Laser sailor looking for more time in the boat.

I just joined the Yahoo group...I sail Stars out of CPYC in the summer and just re-acquired a laser so hopefully we can stir up enough interest to keep a laser series going this winter.

I wouldn't want to take a walk in the middle of a New England winter much less sail a boat. I hope y'all keep the sail pointed up and not in the water.

Now, now, 'round here we say "there's no such thing as bad weather, just inadequate clothing."

Have great fun guys....I just took a swim in the ocean 5 blocks from my house, and the water was a 'nippy 80 degrees.....I DO hope no-one 'goes over the edge'.........
